I spend a lot of time making the birthday lists that I send out for gifts for my children. This year, I started my search for toys that would be fun but also would serve some sort of purpose. There is nothing wrong with the boys getting toys like Paw Patrol, Transformers, or trucks. But, they have so many of them that they just get lost in the mix. I wanted them to get special toys this year that where different from anything else they already had. I wanted them to be educational but still keep my sons interested in them. And, I didn't want them to break the bank for anyone. After hours (literally hours) of searching, I found some great options. My sons LOVE all of these.
1. The Code-A-Pillar $39.99

This toy is amazing! Kids get to build the Code-A-Pillar up one command at a time. Through this process of playing with the toy, kids learn the basics of coding. My son Isaac loves to set up the green dot as far away as he can from the red dot. He has learned how to remove a command if it doesn't work and try a new one. You can get extra links to it too and I would definitely recommend getting more of the green straight arrow. Whenever we reach the purple connector that plays music we always stop for a dance party!
I cannot say enough great things about this toy. It is so much better than I could have ever imagined. It has 13 different instruments that you can listen to individually and then slowly build an orchestra. My sons have learned so much about these 13 different instruments. It also allows you to change the tempo and volume. There are different buttons on the side that light up and let you know which instruments are brass, woodwind, etc. It was so much bigger than I thought it would be too.

I love this and so do my sons. My sister-in-law always had it on her lists for things to get her kids and I was always so nervous because I thought it would be too messy. It definitely gets a little messy but it is not as bad as real sand! I would definitely recommend getting the Brookstone box to contain it. I also used tupperware and that works just as well. The tiny sand castles are my sons favorite accessories for it.

4. Magformers / Picasso Tiles $20+
My oldest loves to build extravagant towers. They have fallen over several times but they never hurt him if they hit him on the way down. My youngest son also really enjoys playing with them and building smaller structures. I have to say I really like the Picasso Tiles better than the Magformers. The Picasso Tiles are solid and bigger which allow for larger creations. They are also cheaper so you get more for your money. I would definitely recommend a set that is 60+. You can combine the different sets and they work well enough, but they do not fit perfectly together.
